A fatal car accident was reported in St. Mary's Tuesday. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports 71 year old Henry Stueve of St. Mary's died in the accident in St. Mary's. Stueve was driving a 2004 Toyota passenger car westbound on Durink Street, and failed to yield to a second southbound vehicle on K-63. The second vehicle, a 2006 Ford truck, struck Stueve's toyota in the passenger side door. Stueve's car came to rest in a residential yard against a utility pole and fire hydrant. The truck also came to rest in the same residential yard, but struck a house. The driver of the truck, 25 year old Thomas Melechinsky of Delia, was not injured. Stueve was taken by ambulance to St. Mary's Health Center, then to St. Francis in Topeka via Life star where he died shortly after 5:30 last (Tuesday) evening.

Former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline has received a defense subpoena to testify at the trial of the man charged with killing one of the nation's few late-term abortion providers. Kline was among the first abortion opponents to publicly condemn the shooting of Dr. George Tiller last May 31 at a Wichita church. Fifty-one-year-old Scott Roeder of Kansas City, Missouri, is set to go on trial January 11 on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault. Roeder has publicly admitted killing Tiller. Kline's spokesman, Brian Burgess, confirms Kline received a subpoena in the mail from Roeder's attorneys.

President Obama said Tuesday that U.S. intelligence has had considerable success, but that the botched Christmas Day attack shows "the system has failed" in a major way.
"When a suspected terrorist is able to board a plane with explosives on Christmas Day, the system has failed in a potentially disastrous way," Obama said at the White House in a statement to reporters.
The president used even stronger language in a private meeting in the Situation Room with top aides, a senior administration official said.
In his public comments, the president said that U.S. intelligence had uncovered numerous "red flags" prior to the attack.

A little-publicized decision by Italy's Constitutional Court last month may have significant implications concerning the direction of Europe, strengthening national sovereignty as a bulwark against transnational overreach by European institutions. It also signals the continued importance of national constitutions, despite the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty earlier this month.
In Sentenza N. 311, the Italian Constitutional Court stated that where rulings by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) conflict with provisions of the Italian Constitution, such rulings "lack legitimacy." Sources close to the Italian judiciary told the Friday Fax that the decision was intended as a warning that activist rulings by the Strasbourg-based ECHR overstepping jurisdictional boundaries will not be given deference.
Sources point to the timing of the decision, which followed an early November ECHR ruling, Lautsi v. Italy, directing that crucifixes be removed from the Italian classroom. The Italian government is appealing that decision to the full Grand Chamber.
