May
25. On this day in 1844, the first telegraphed news dispatch was published
in Maryland; on this day in 1953, the first non-commercial educational
television station was aired in Houston, TX; and on this day in 2002, the
first all-Traditional radio station went live on the air in St. Mary's, KS.
Sitting here looking down on the quad, I can't believe it's been that long
already. It seems like just yesterday we were hesitantly downloading our
station's first music into the computer. At the same time, as far as we have
come in the last nine months, we have so far to go. This is just a drop in
the bucket! The thought is rather intimidating, but thanks to all the
efforts of our conscientious helpers who realize what an apostolate we
really are, our station shows much promise.
As our prodigy advances from the dependent stages of infancy to the more
daring adventures of the toddler, we thought you would appreciate hearing
more of what's going on. The workload may grow, but so do our horizons.
That's why I write this article today....from what I affectionately call
"The Crow's Nest."
Just what are we about? Sometimes we get so bogged down in our daily
struggles, it's hard to remember. A glance at the picture of the Sacred
Heart quickly puts our thoughts back on track... and the short motto of St.
Pius X runs through our minds: "Instaurare omnia in Christo." Restore all
things in Christ! What could be a better way to give honor to God than a
radio station, traditionally-minded, free from all the secular trash in
which we swim today? In this simple fact lies the purpose of our apostolate.
For those who may not otherwise learn; for those who may not otherwise hear;
for those who may not otherwise care, it is there, as easily accessible as a
turn of the knob...requiring no more searching than tuning in to 98.3 FM! We
have our official lodge nestled above the newly restored auditorium.
Although our quarters may be small and primitive, our work is far from that.
On the air seven days a week, from 6 am to 9 pm every day, there is always
something to be done. The computers must be monitored at all times,
requiring the generous efforts of our volunteer staff. As time goes by, and
we become more organized (the basics being mastered), we have more time to
develop new plans from different ideas. Currently, our music database
contains pre-recorded selections of various Latin and English hymns, many
classical renditions, and even some Lawrence Welk. There is a time of day
for everything, and our purpose is not only to bring enjoyment to our
families in the area, but also to help keep our minds on God throughout the
day, no matter what we're doing. Upon closer scrutiny, one can hear frequent
ejaculations interspersed among the selections throughout the day; the
Angelus recited three times (morning, noon, and evening); and the rosary
aired every night. Not only that, but short sermons can be heard at certain
pre-announced times, directing our minds and hearts to God. But that's not
all! Parishioners can tune in to learn the most recent developments in
school and parish activities. Children, too, have their own hour, aired
twice a day, with wholesome sing-a-longs played specifically for their
entertainment.
So this is what we are...right now. Changes are being made-even daily-that
show that we are advancing quickly on the road to better pastures...to give
you a sneak peak: in the near future, an opera hour looms on the horizon;
we'll be bringing in more of our local talent to show us (and then you!)
what they've really been up to. We'll also be incorporating more-talk time
with an educational flare.
But whatever we have planned, I'll be back with you soon, to let you know,
and fill you in on the most current news about our station. Until next time,
God bless you all!
